"The highest purpose in life is not in sublime religious experiences nor in exaulted callings, but in faithfullness to the task at hand, whatever that might be." Henry David Drummond Why wannabe? January 3rd 2003 Watching the TV again Rat? Nobody should concern themselves that it will be added to my regular list of vices on the basis of the parade of puerile candyfloss and lip gloss bullshit I have been insulting my intelligence with for the past few days. I wasted, or whiled away a few minutes as three teenage lovelies on the wannabe circuit honed their impressions to something close to perfection. The sensual singer on their collective pedestal is known as Christina. Herself a lithe and lissome product of whichever record company found her first I presume. The Rat concedes that her songs are for the most part half decent, although how this justifies the need that trio feels to become her is something he finds hard to relate to. They all aspire to an ideal of manufactured beauty that is is many ways just the tinsle on a pretty Christina Christmas tree. Ironic indeed that these are American teens, coming from the country that purports to value individuality and self above all else. Or is that the self that Corporate America convinces them they wannabe? Why would anyone wish to become another person? Do they value their own uniqueness so little as to want to obliterate it under the merciless spotlight of their idol and her manufactured beauty? Lennon's assassin believed himself to be the great man so it is said. Can this be healthy? In many ways, the threesome already have what they desire. Just like the blessed Christina, they all have bad hair days, each shares the need to consume nutritious food, and later to defecate. The toilet seat is a great leveller. |
